Craft beer bars in Amsterdam? Drinking beer in Amsterdam is not all about the Heineken. Of course you can find this standard-issue pilsner everywhere and it does do the job on a hot summer’s day. But Amsterdam has dozens of great craft beer bars all with an extensive beer menu ranging from sour beers to stouts. Alright, let’s get into the list of the best craft beer places in Amsterdam to enjoy a delicious pint.

One of the first craft brewers on the scene was Brouwerij t’IJ, opening in 1985. Serving a great selection of characteristic amsterdam craft beer with many seasonals and one-off specials. Kasper Peterson, the founder, needed to find a home for all his experimental brewing after he fell in love with belgian style beers. He was actually a musician, you know, finding his love for these beers while touring south of the dutch border. You can do tours there of the brewery where they explain the brewing process. Obviously while you are sipping on a Zatte Tripel or IJWIT beer, yum! Craft beer bars in Amsterdam favorite for sure!!

This one might not be the usual top of the list beer cafe but we love that they draw their inspiration from the past! The brewery was once part of a 16th century abbey, founded to accommodate repenting prostitutes, say what?! The nuns began catering for the local aristocracy at the start of their services which then spread slowly into beer brewing. With many of the beers named after figures that worked and drank there the menu is an interesting read. They don’t offer tours of the brewery but while drinking your beer you can see the copper tanks in the back. 

As the very first beer cafe in Amsterdam to start serving Belgium beers it’s no surprise it has done very well. Bar Gollem has 6 locations in Amsterdam now.  All the bars have a great atmosphere and a lot of character. The best thing about going here is that the barmen are always on point. Just have a chat, sit at the bar and let them woo you with their skills to pick the perfect beer for you! With the impressive collection of special beer you will never want to leave before trying them all.   

They say “Our expansive range of beautifully crafted beer. Served with a smile” If that doesn’t sell it you! Howling wolf, tropical ralphie, funky falcon, White mamba, these are just a few of the names of the beers they have made. Hidden away among the red lights in Amsterdam is De Prael Brewery. It’s a really cosy and welcoming taproom filled with vintage furniture. With a very active schedule they host many engaging activities from beer tastings, bingo nights to father’s day brewery tours. It’s not a surprise that they put a lot of emphasis on beer & people. Saying these two are meant to go together. Well we couldn’t agree more! They offer 11 different brews as part of their standard assortment. Occasionally they have seasonal beers which they will always keep you updated about! We would really recommend going on a tour of the brewery!

If you are on a budget and looking for a fun and casual beer bar that serves their own beer go to bierfabriek. They give you unlimited peanuts to eat and you can throw the shells on the floor. A floor full of peanut shells definitely adds to the atmosphere. This bar is a 5 minute walk from Dam square and located very centrally in the Nes. 

The taproom is the heart of Oedipus brewery. A great thing is that they bottle everything there on the spot, how cool is that! With celestial flavors and experimental colors they have the most vibrant beers out there. The bottle designs are awesome. They have 11 beers that you can get year round and 4 recurring seasonal beers. The taproom terrace is the perfect place to try out these new beers while enjoying the sun! 

Last but not at all least is Delirium! With over 500 craft beers!! The concept is part of a franchise which has been a big success in other countries such as Belgium, Rio, France, Dubai and Tokyo. The Netherlands location opened it’s door in 2014. They have great beer tasting menus made to your liking and the staff are always great at helping you choose the perfect beer for your mood.
