How to Keep Beer Cold at a Festival or BBQ Without a Cooler Box

A cooler box is the right tool for a crowd and the wrong tool for one person.

It is heavy, it leaks, plenty of festivals will not let you bring one, and within an hour everything inside is floating in cold water anyway.

For keeping the drink in your own hand cold, use a personal freezer-bullet cooler. You freeze the core overnight, drop your can or bottle in, and there is no ice, no meltwater and nothing to carry.

Here is how to do it properly, and one thing we are not going to claim.

Why ice fails outdoors

Weight and bulk. A full cooler box is awkward to carry any distance, and it is on the banned list at a lot of festivals and stadiums.

The melt. Ice turns to water fast in the sun. Your cans end up swimming in a lukewarm puddle, and the labels come off.

No refills. Once the ice has gone, there is nowhere to get more. That is usually about two hours into the day.

How to keep your beer cold without one

The Beer Coolenator with its removable freezer bullet beside a bottle of beer

  1. Freeze the bullet overnight. The freezer bullet needs a long, cold freeze. For the wine bullet we measured about nine hours at -18 °C to fully solidify, so treat a full night as the minimum and put it near the back rather than in the door.
  2. Start with a cold drink. Take the can or bottle straight from the fridge or a cold crate. A personal cooler holds a chill. It will not rescue a warm beer quickly.
  3. Twist in the bullet and drop the drink in. The Beer Coolenator takes standard cans and small bottles.
  4. Put it back between sips. Every time it comes out, warm air goes in. This makes more difference than people expect.

How long does it actually keep beer cold?

We are not going to give you a number, because we have not measured one.

What we have measured is the wine version. A Classic Coolenator held a served 750 ml bottle below its 8 °C starting temperature for six hours at 20 to 22 °C ambient, using a calibrated probe in the liquid.

The Beer Coolenator works on the same principle with a smaller bullet and a smaller volume of drink, so the honest answer is that we expect it to behave differently and we have not yet run the same controlled test on it. When we do, the figure goes on this page.

Plenty of brands would quote the wine number here and hope you did not check. We would rather tell you what we know.

Why a personal cooler beats a box at a festival

It fits in a bag. It needs no ice. It makes no wet mess. And it keeps the drink you are actually holding cold, rather than one you have to fish out of a tub.

For a crowd, bring the box. For your own beer, bring the small thing.

When a cooler box is still better

We would rather be useful than sell you the wrong item.

If you are supplying a group, camping across several days, or need to keep food cold as well as drinks, a cooler box is the correct tool and a personal cooler is not a substitute. Buy the box.

Questions people ask

How do you keep beer cold at a festival without ice?

Use a personal freezer-bullet cooler. Freeze the core beforehand and it keeps a can or bottle cold with nothing to refill and nothing to spill.

Does the Beer Coolenator fit cans and bottles?

Yes. The insulated cup takes standard cans and small bottles.

How long should I freeze the bullet?

Overnight at -18 °C or colder. Longer is always better, and placement in the freezer matters more than most people realise.

Can I use it for soft drinks?

Yes. It does not care what is in the can.
