Gifts for Wine Lovers: 12 That Still Get Used in July

We started Coolenator because we kept ruining perfectly good rosé.

Every summer, the same thing. Bottle out of the fridge, twenty minutes on the garden table, and by the second glass it had gone warm. There was always a puddle where the ice bucket had been.

We tried the neoprene sleeves. We tried the vacuum tubes. In the end we spent two years and a lot of failed prototypes building something that held its temperature for six hours instead of forty minutes.

That process left us with one strong opinion about wine gifts. It comes down to a single question:

Will they still be using it in July?

Most wine gifts fail that question, usually for the same reason. They assume the person wants a wine hobby. Most people don't. They want a cold bottle, a cork that comes out cleanly, and a table that stays dry.

Solve one of those and the gift sits on the counter for years. Decorate around them and it is in a cupboard by Easter.

Below are twelve that pass and four that don't. We make some of them. We will say which, and we will say when something we don't sell is the better buy.

The three that always work

A double-hinged corkscrew

Around €12. Best for anyone still using the winged one from a hamper.

Not the winged kind that wobbles and shreds the cork. You want a double-hinged waiter's friend, the sort most sommeliers carry. Pulltap's is the usual name.

The second notch lifts the cork in two stages instead of hauling it out in one. Four seconds, no bent cork, no forearm involved.

It costs less than a decent bottle of Rioja. It will also be the most-used thing you give anyone this year.

Glasses one step better than theirs

€60 to €200. Best for someone who would rather own four perfect glasses than twelve safe ones.

Not ours, and worth spending on. Zalto Universal glasses are astonishingly thin and they change how a wine reads. They will also break eventually, which is rather the point.

If there are children, a dishwasher or a stone floor in the picture, buy Schott Zwiesel instead and everybody stays friends.

A book they will actually finish

€25 to €50. Best for the reader. Pick one, not both.

Cork Dork by Bianca Bosker is a journalist's year inside the sommelier world. It is funny, and right for someone who loves wine but finds wine people faintly ridiculous.

The World Atlas of Wine goes the other way. Enormous, beautiful, and correct for someone already several years in.

A Coolenator wine cooler keeping rosé chilled outdoors at sunset

Ours, with the honest version of each

The Coolenator Classic

Coolenator Classic wine cooler in silver with a bottle of wine

€59.95. Best for anyone who drinks outdoors. Terraces, gardens, boats.

This is the one we spent two years on.

An ice bucket is good for about an hour. After that it is a bowl of water and your label has come off. A neoprene sleeve doesn't cool anything at all. It slows the warming down, which is a much weaker promise than the packaging suggests.

We know because we owned both and kept being disappointed by them.

How it works

A removable aluminium core lives in your freezer. When you want it, slide it into the insulated body and drop the bottle in.

It adds cold rather than just holding warmth off. That is the whole difference.

The numbers

These were measured with calibrated equipment, not estimated. From a 750 ml bottle at 8 °C in a room at 20 to 22 °C:

  • Down to roughly 1 °C within two hours
  • Still below its 8 °C starting temperature at the six-hour mark
  • No ice, no meltwater, no condensation, so dry hands and no ring on the table

The practical bits

Six finishes. If it is a gift, rose gold and champagne gold are what people tend to choose. Silver, black, sand and sage green suit quieter taste.

It fits 750 ml wine, champagne and prosecco bottles up to 10 cm across, plus most carafes.

Hand wash only. The insulated interior doesn't survive a dishwasher, and we would rather tell you now than have you find out.

Classic Silver · Rose Gold · Champagne Gold · Black

A personalised one

Personalised Coolenator wine cooler printed with a custom photo

€64.95. Best for when you want it to be obviously for them.

A photo or a name printed on the cooler. We design these, so treat us as biased.

What we can tell you is that something changes in how they get used. A generic gift goes back in the cupboard between outings. A personalised one stays out on the counter.

Allow a few extra days, since personalisation adds production time. Personalised Coolenator.

The Tall

Coolenator Tall wine cooler holding a champagne bottle

€69. Best for someone who opens sparkling more often than still.

Champagne and prosecco bottles are taller than wine bottles. A standard cooler leaves the neck sitting out in the warm, which is exactly where the bubbles suffer.

There is also a Tall Turbo at €79 with two freezer cores, for hot days and long lunches. Coolenator Tall.

The Wine Glass Coolenator

Wine Glass Coolenator with its removable freezer bullet

€39.95. Best for slow drinkers only. Wrong for anyone else.

This keeps the glass cold rather than the bottle. A white poured at 8 °C reaches room temperature in about fifteen minutes on a warm terrace.

So if someone nurses a single glass across an evening, this fixes a problem they stopped noticing years ago.

If they drink at pace, buy the bottle cooler instead. This one will disappoint you. Wine Glass Coolenator.

An extra freezer bullet

Coolenator extra freezer bullet, the removable cooling core

€14.95. Best for someone who already owns one.

This is the accessory owners buy for themselves. Two cores in the freezer means the second bottle is cold straight away instead of nine hours later.

A small gift that shows you noticed what they actually use. Extra Freezer Bullet.

The Beer Coolenator

Beer Coolenator with its removable freezer bullet beside a beer bottle

€22.95. Best for the one at every gathering who politely declines the wine.

Same removable core, sized for a 330 ml bottle. Beer Coolenator.

The Copper

Solid copper Coolenator wine cooler

€245. Best for a wedding or a fiftieth. Not a Tuesday.

We made this one because we wanted to make it. That is not a business rationale, but it is the truth.

Solid copper, properly heavy, and it develops a patina rather than looking worn. It reads as an object rather than a kitchen gadget. Copper Coolenator.

Two more worth knowing about

A Coravin

Around €200 and up. Best for someone who drinks alone, or slowly, or owns bottles too good for a Wednesday.

Not ours, and the cleverest thing in wine. It pours a glass straight through the cork without removing it, so the rest of the bottle keeps for weeks.

Every other gift here changes how someone drinks. This one changes what they can afford to open.

A gift card

Coolenator gift card

From €25. Best for when you have never seen their kitchen.

Unromantic, and we would normally leave it off a list like this.

One exception, though: colour. There are six finishes and people are particular. Let them choose. Coolenator gift card.

Four we would skip

Aerating pourers. The claim is that they age a bottle by years in seconds. They do not. Twenty minutes in a plain decanter does more.

Wine-themed novelty anything. Socks, signs, slogan glasses. Funny once, then it lives in a drawer for a decade because nobody can bring themselves to throw away a present.

Wine fridges, usually. Excellent for storing a collection, useless for what most people want, which is a cold bottle on the table tonight. Only buy one if they properly cellar wine.

Sculptural decanters. Impossible to wash, used twice. A plain wide-based one costs less and gets used weekly.

The thirty-second version

If they Buy
Drink outdoors, on terraces, in gardens, on boats Classic (€59.95)
Open sparkling more than still Tall (€69)
Nurse one glass all evening Wine Glass Coolenator (€39.95)
Still use a winged corkscrew Pulltap's (around €12)
Own bottles too good to finish Coravin (around €200)
Drink beer, not wine Beer Coolenator (€22.95)
Already own a Coolenator Extra freezer bullet (€14.95)
Are being properly celebrated Copper (€245)

One last thing

The best wine gift is almost never wine. A bottle is gone in an evening.

Everything on this list comes back out every summer for years, and that is as true of the €12 corkscrew as of anything we make.

The cooling data is on how it works if you want to check it. Everything else is at the full range, and shipping for your country is on the shipping page.
